2009 Commission Election Issues

I cannot remember Longboat Key facing a more challenging time both economically and socially.

I believe we have reached that juncture in the development of our island community where we need to make clear decisions about our future.

The Key Club expansion plan typifies a persistent divide in our community between those who want a quiet residential setting and those who want a vibrant tourist economy. I personally do not believe that we will ever return to the level of tourism that once flourished on Longboat Key.

I will outline what I believe to be the key issues confronting island voters as we approach the 2009 election, where three commission seats are in contention. I supported term limits because I believe our community benefits from a periodic infusion of new ideas and fresh energy. Being a commissioner is a difficult task requiring much effort and diligence.

Beach Maintenance: the greatest financial obstacle confronting our island is how to economically maintain our beautiful beaches. If one looks no further than the most recent report by the town's experts then there is a possibility that sand could cost as much as $46 a yard for the next beach nourishment in six or seven years. The last replenishment three years ago required in excess of two million yards of sand. Please look at my web site devoted to a discussion of alternative beach management methods that are successful in other communities both in Florida and around the world.

Employee Retirement Obligation: I believe we are one of many municipalities confronted with the specter of town staff retirement costs that has yet to find a workable solution. I do not profess to have a solution. I have read about solutions that range from increased taxes to reduced services to abandoning town services in favor of merging with county services.

Consultants
: Longboat Key saw a nineteen percent increase in the cost of third party services for consulting and specialized projects beyond the scope of the town's resources. We will spend two million dollars on outside services in fiscal year 2008. I am not sure we are always getting good value for our tax dollars relying so heavily on outside services. If I am elected I will approach this issue far differently than is currently the case.

Key Club Expansion: Although any expansion at the Key Club has little effect on the rest of Longboat Key, I am still opposed to the expansion as presented. I believe that the expansion plan does not serve the interests of all the existing property owners. I also feel that adding upto an additional 250 rooms to the 250 rooms already approved by the voters earlier this year exceeds the density that most residents expected. I wonder why the Key Club remained mum as they watched the referendum election.

I believe the time has come for a pro-active commission that has the abilities and the will to lead our community into the future.
