I am a fiscal conservative when it comes to local government. One of the key reasons I am making the effort to run for the town commission is my belief that past and present commissions have been ineffective at controlling expenses. I have witnessed several failed projects and project cost overruns. I believe that I can do a better job of controlling expenditures.

I also feel that the commission is and has been closed to participation by residents in the affairs of Longboat Key. I have witnessed repeated worthwhile attempts by residents and citizen groups being dismissed by the commission in favor of the wishes of the town manager, even though the town manager has not presented the commissioners with a well researched proposal, that is backed up by expert factual information. I feel that the commissioners should show due deference to those who go to great effort to try to help and improve life on this island.

I believe that the commissioners need to be an effective body that acts as checks and balances to the the town manager. I feel that too often the commissioners defer to the town manager with a seeming lack of enthusiasm for fully exploring many issues.

I believe that commissioners are obligated to try to fully understand all aspects of the expenditures and ordinances and variances that are brought before them.

If I am elected commissioner I will bring a new level of diligence to the commission.
