Tennis Center Expansion

I have always been in favor of a community tennis facility on Longboat. I would prefer that the tennis center be self-sustaining, but keeping in mind that most of our other public amenities require taxpayer financing. This is true for most communities. Longboat is an exclusive community and many residents and visitors alike expect to enjoy certain community activities. I believe increased public access to the island's three golf courses would enhance our standing among other exclusive municipalities.

The proposed expansion of the tennis center facilities may become an increasing contentious issue on the island, as the cost of constructing the new building increases with every Commission meeting.

I believe all Longboat Key residents and taxpayers benefit from a public tennis center. However, during these times of fiscal stress, many residents may feel that the monies received from the county might better be used for other infrastructure projects that have a direct impact on all the people on the island.

I have put some effort into seeking less expensive alternatives to the proposed new facility that is now projected to exceed $800,000.00.

I am not saying that what I have proposed as a possible lower cost solutions will be viable upon close examination. However, I do feel that our community needs to begin thinking outside the box instead of embracing the first solution that is presented, and this does not only apply to the tennis center.

I have looked at several companies that create attractive structures from recycled shipping containers. These structures are recycled and therefore "green". The shipping containers are certified to withstand one hundred and fifty mile-per-hour winds. They are constructed of heavy steel and are therefore fireproof.
